PRIVATE AND PUBLIC FIRE PROTECTION. WE have frequently made reference to the New England mutual fire insurance companies that are devoted to the insurance of factories and mills, and pointed out the wonderful success that has attended their transactions. There are thirteen of these companies located in Massachusetts and Rhode Island that make it a business to insure the large cotton and woolen mills and other industrial properties in various parts of the country. The fundamental principle upon which they operate, and which tends to make them so successful as to enable them to furnish insurance to their members at a less rate than the stock insurance companies can afford to do, lies in the very thorough inspections made of the property in advance of insurance being granted, and also the very stringent requirements as to private fire protection for the property insured.
