TOPICS OF THE DAY. ALVARADO MAYER, one of the oldest engineers of the Detroit Fire Department, is the inventor of a relief valve for steam fire engines. Among other cities that have used this invention was New Bedford, Mass., against which the Shaw Relief Valve Company of Boston brought suit, on the ground that the Mayer valve infringed upon Shaw’s patent. From a letter written by the City Solicitor of New Bedford February 16, we learn that Judge Cole dismissed the bill brought by the Shaw Company after a full and careful trial, thus deciding that the Mayer valve is not an infringement.
