THE bill creating the office of a fire marshal for Boston, Mass., at a salary of $3000 per annum, has passed the legislature, and now requires only the approval of the city council to become a law. Much is said in the fire department as to who the new official will be. Captain Samuel Abbott, Jr., appears to be the favorite. HE couldn’t keep out of it, anyway. That is, Secretary Hills of the National Association has been out of active service in fire departments for several years, and, having served full time and some to carry, thought he would keep out. But he couldn’t, and is once more a chief engineer. He lives at Hartwell, a suburb of Cincinnati, where a fire department was recently organized ; having been active in securing the organization, Hills was at once chosen chief.
