TOPICS OF THE DAY MR. MARJENHOFF of Charleston last week wrote us of the prompt response of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Memphis, Tenn., to his appeal. He forgot, however, to mention the amounts sent. However, considerable absence of mind can be forgiven a community which is now earthquake-shaken every day or two. THE Bennett and Stephenson medals, which were awarded to Chief Short and Foreman Shaw in New York last Saturday, are the highest decorations of honor obtainable by any firemen in America. These two brave and capable men may reasonably feel proud of the medals. The cheers which greeted them in Washington Park last Saturday attested to the esteem in which they are held by New Yorkers.
