He crawled out of one of the front windows on the third floor and squatted there, calling lustily for help. The quarters of Marshal Murphy are not far away from the building, and when he arrived there with Engine Company No. 17, Cruver’s cries were the first thing he heard, and the marshal and Captain Lynch both discovered the man in his perilous position. The flames were rolling out of the upper part of the window and smoke was pouring from the window below. Quick work was necessary to save his life.
