WHILE it would be impossible that any set of requisites could be formulated to suit all classes of duty, and cover all the points of a steam fire engine, it is possible to select certain prime desiderata which are in varying degree demanded by the engineers of fire service, no matter in what part of the country, and with no matter what limiting conditions. Of course, in one instance, one quality may be in higher demand than in another, and there may be cases where even the relative positions of two qualities may change places in the scale ; but take it as a rule, there are general points in a steamer as in a horse or a cow, a watch or a house, which are recognized as well to look to.
