TOPICS OF THE DAY. D. J. SWENIE, for eight years chief of the Chicago Fire Department, was on Monday night reappointed by Mayor Roche, and confirmed by the council. That is well. If all the new Mayor’s appointments arc as judicious, Chicago will have cause for congratulation. THIS year’s edition of The Chronicle Fire Tables has been issued. It now includes the fire statistics of the United States for the years 1875 1886, and a number of new and interesting features. As a work of reference for underwriters and persons interested in the fire service, it will be more valuable than ever. RATHER a good story is told by The Boston Commercial Bulletin at the expense of the protective department of that city.
