TOPICS OF THE DAY. GOVERNOR JOHN B. GORDON of Georgia played fireman on Monday last, to his great credit. The Leyden House at Atlanta, which adjoins the Executive Mansion, took fire at three o’clock in the morning. The Governor, seeing the light from his bedroom window, rushed out, helped awaken the sleeping inmates of the hotel, and escorted all the ladies safely to his own and a neighboring house. It isn’t every Governor who has such a chance to distinguish himself. THE New York World calls upon the fire commissioners to give the annexed district of Westchester county more fire protection. It calls attention to the fact that there is but one fire engine and one hook and ladder truck between the Harlem river and 148th street, a district which includes Port Morris, Springhurst, Mott Haven and Oak Point, places containing numbers of valuable apartment houses and factories, besides many…
