TOPICS OF THE DAY. WE note with pleasure the election of Captain Samuel Abbott, Jr., as president of the Massachusetts State Firemen’s Association. A better choice could not have been made, and the members of the association may congratulate themselves that they have intrusted its affairs to such capable hands. DOWN in Wayne county, Ky., the other day a negro who had been guilty of a serious crime was caught by a party of lynchers and burned to death in a pile of fence rails covered with coal oil. No matter what the offense of the victim, it is to be trusted that the perpetrators of such a deed of barbarity as this will not be allowed to escape the law.
