A Question of Priority. To the Editor of FIRE AND WATER: In your issue of June 6 you give a description, credited to The Haverhill (Mass.) Bulletin, of a lighter for steamers, claiming the invention for S. C. Jackson of that place, who, it is said, has patented it. This lighter has been in constant use in Bridgeport since 1879 (possibly before), and a full description of it was published in a New York firemen’s paper at the time, also in numerous local papers here and elsewhere. It originated with me so far as I know, and no patents were taken out, so at the present time it is public property. WM. A. BARNES, BRIDGEPORT, CONN., June 10. Supt. Fire Telegraph.
