No Franchise for the East River Tunnel. At a meeting of the Long Island City Board of Aldermen last week, the Aldermanic committee appointed to confer with representatives of the New York and Long Island Railroad Company in relation to granting to the latter company a franchise empowering them to extend the proposed East River tunnel through certain streets rendered a voluminous report, in which they advised the refusal of the franchise. The report was adopted by the Board of Aldermen and a resolution refusing the franchise was passed. The committee claimed that there was no apparent capital behind the company asking the franchise and intimated that if the company could afford to pay three and one-half per cent of its gross earnings to New York City for the privilege of tunneling certain streets, some similar provision should be made for Long Island City, The petition asking for the franchise…
