Notes From the East. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Edwin L. Vaughn, chief engineer of the Worcester (Mass.) Fire Department, is a tall, athletic-looking man, who seems in every way qualified for the position to which he has recently been appointed. He is thoroughly posted on the details of department work, having been for many years first assistant under ex-Chief Coombs. Chief Vaughn is a warm advocate of chemical engines and extinguishers and was quite enthusiastic in relating how he extinguished what threatened to be a serious fire by the prompt aid of portable extinguishers. The flames had broken out in the top floor of a large building when the firemen arrived and Chief Vaughn decided to try and conquer the fire with as little injury to the property as possible from water.
