Fire Watch Towers in Large Cities. Since the introduction of the modern system of street alarm telegraph in nearly all of our large cities, the system of keeping watchmen placed in an elevated position for the purpose of discovering fires and giving an alarm for the same, either by ringing an alarm upon a large bell or by sending an alarm out by telegraph, has been, except in a few instances, generally abandoned. Whether this has been productive of benefit is a question that is very doubtful.
