SEWERAGE. The bids for the sewer at Thorndike, Mass., will be opened by the selectmen a week from Monday. As soon as the tile can be brought from Akron, O., work will immediately begin on the new sewers at Middletown, Conn., ordered for Miller, Bridge, Pearl and Hotchkiss streets, and Goodyear avenue. The contract was awarded to Lyman D. Mills. The long looked for improvement of Grand avenue and Main street, Astoria, Long Island, has begun. The sewer will be laid by Contractor George H. Smith, and Johnson & Lowe will do the curbing, flagging and paving. The total cost will be $137,000. The disbursements of the sewer commissioners of Pittsfield, Mass., for August amounted to $9000, which included payments to the contractors and for brick, pipe, etc. Bids were opened recently at Cleveland, O., for the purchase of $122,000 of sewer and street improvement bonds.
