THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS. The ten days just passed have been marked by the occurrence of a rather unusual number of destructive fires in different parts of the country, and of accidents to firemen. From Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Montana and the Dakotas come reports of extensive and destructive forest and prairie fires, doing incalculable money damage and causing the loss of several lives. The villages of Perley and Comstock, Wis., were swept away, and the dwellers in numerous other villages and settlements are reported as fighting desperately to save their homes. At latest accounts, however, rain was falling in several of the harrowed tracts of country, checking the progress of the flames. The cities of Minneapolis, St. Louis, Philadelphia and Savannah were also heavily visited by the flames.
