A Large Mechanical Filter. In the public buildings at Philadelphia there has been in successful operation for about six months past what is asserted to be the largest mechanical filter in the world. This filter is over 20 feet in diameter and about 12 feet In height. At the test made by the public buildings committee before paying for it the filter was operated under a pressure of 125 pounds for forty-eight hours, the case standing this extreme pressure without showing any structural weakness or leaking. This filter, the arrangement of the valves in which is shown in the accompanjfcg illustration, furnishes all the water for the great public buildings, and is capable of furnishing 1,250,000 gallons each twenty-four hours of clear, bright and wholesome filtered water.
