A Portable Telephone for Fire Department Use. Captain Paterson of the Glasgow (Scotland) Fire Brigade, according to an English contemporary, some months ago conceived the idea that a portable telephone which could be connected to any of the street or other fire alarms, and thus establish temporary communication with headquarters, would be of considerable use. The National Telephone Company was requested by the captain to furnish a trial telephone of a special form which would answer the requirements of the corps in these respects. This was done in April last, and since that time the ingenious method of utilizing the street alarms for the conveyance of brigade messages from any part of the city to various points has been, it is stated, thoroughly tested, with very satisfactory results.
