FIRE AND WATER Wm. H. Murphy, assistant superintendent fire alarm telegraph, was appointed in 1882, and has held that position with credit. When he took charge of the telegraph department he found it in a very bad condition. He has kept adding to it and by bard work for the last ten years has created one of the finest in the country of its size. C E. Johnson, assistant on machinery, was appointed in April, 1890, an engineer of Steamer No. 3, and held that position until September, 1892, when he was promoted to assistant on machinery. He is a first class machinist and is patentee of a harness called the Johnson hitch, which has been adopted by this department and several others.
