THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS. The second election for chief engineer of the Elizabeth Fire Department was held May 30. The election held last month was thrown out because intimidation, violence and bribery were shown to have been resorted to. City Clerk Manning had charge of the ballot box. Alderman Brady, chairman of the fire committee, supervised the voting, and the secretaries of the companies acted as challengers. Policeman Smith was present. The polls opened at 8 o’clock A. M. and closed at 1 r. M. The contest was a most orderly one, and all the eight companies in the department polled their full quota, the entire vote being cast by noon. The result was a surprise to the knowing ones, who had predicted that ex-Chief N. H. Astfalk of Rolla Engine Company would be the winner.
