THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS. Chief W. R. Joyner of Atlanta, Ga., has started a fund in aid of the families of the men killed at the Cold Storage warehouse fire in Chicago. The movement has thus far been confined to paid departments, and the idea has been to have each man donate a day’s pay. The returns have been most gratifying. The fund should be extended to volunteer departments, where general contributions could be taken up and sent in to Chief Joyner. At present the fund amounts to $160,000. At least $250,000 should be raised for the purpose. Tucson, Ariz., has purchased 1000 feet of cotton rubberlined hose. The fire committee of the board of supervisors, San Francisco, Cal., has decided to purchase two Champion chemical engines at a cost not to exceed $2100 each.
