Tenement House Fires. The second public hearing of the Tenement House Committee was held Friday of last week in the old Criminal Court building. At the opening of the session Chairman Gilder read the following statement: “The committee hold these public hearings in order to bring out facts and expert opinions useful in the preparation of their report to the Legislature; and also in order to place before the community in new and stronger light some of the evils and dangers of the present tenement-house system in New York, with the hope that an intelligent public opinion may be brought to bear in favor of those remedies which it may be the duty of the committee to suggest. These public hearings supplement the various inquiries and examinations which have been in progress since last spring, when the committee was appointed by the Governor under act of the I.egis lature. “The…
