NEW ORLEANS, LA. The fire commissioners say in their annual report just issued: The board regrets that the appeal for an increased appropriation was not heeded, and states that for this reason the department has not attained the desired standardWhat is essential to make a first class fire department are new trucks with latest improvements, new first class steam engines, and a fully equipped fire boat. The department is now hampered with old machinery which is daily deteriorating, and the lack of necessary funds. A fire boat is greatly needed and they point out the many good serviceg such a boat could render. The secretary’s statement shows that the appropriation of 1894 was $247,000, which was entirely expended, and leaving still an unpaid liabil -ity of 15,006.
