FIRE NEWS George P. Powers, chief of the Pottsville, Pa., Fire Department, has submitted his report, and while commending the department in general terms for efficiency, he devotes considerable space to recommendations for important improvements which include about everything in thedepartment. Patrolman A. J. Johnston of fire patrol No. 5, of New York has been presented with the Underwriters’ gold medal for heroism at a fire. He saved thelivesof A. J. W. Kern, a child, and Miss Annie Prechtel, a domestic, at the Colonial bank fire on Columbus avenue, some weeks ago. R. S. Calkins, superintenden of fire alarm of Cohoes, N. Y.. was summarily dismissed for insubordination and John Ross appointed in his place. Sea Cliff, N. Y., wiH soon havea new $3,500 engine house. The Gamewell fire alarm has been adopted by the West Springfield,Mass., fire commissioners and the system must be installed within fifty days. The larger…
