PACIFIC COAST AND CANADIAN NEWS. (From our own Correspondence.) The coming election in San Francisco promises again to bring the fire department into politics, and very disagreeable personalities are appearing in the press of the city. The same may be said of the Oakland fire department. At Sacramento. Cal., a youthful fire fiend caused considerable trouble recently. The boy, aged eight years, burned several buildings, and made two attempts to burn the jail in which he was incarcerated. Chief Deasy, of Victoria, B. C:, reports eighty-five alarms, with losses aggregating $24,000, for the nine months ending September 80. The city of Victoria bears the enviable reputation of being the safest, from an insurance standpoint, on the Pacific Coast, due, mainly, to the prompt work of the fire department and the laws whereby investigations are held by a judge and jury to ascertain the cause of suspicious fires.
