KANSAS CITY, KAS. FIRE DEPARTMENT. The fire department of this city is acknowledged to be the best in the State. As a paid department it was first established in 1885. It started with 1 station, 4 men and 1 hose reel. Now there are 3 stations, with 2 hook and ladder trucks, 2 hose reels, 1 steam fire engine, and 12 men. The department also does all its own repairing and horse-shoeing. During the year the department attended several large fires: laid about 69,450 feet of hose, and traveled about 1,075 miles to fires. The total loss on buildings last year was §303,385; insurance, $567,536; on contents, $394,607; insurance $787, 437; total amount of property endangered by fires, $4,275,000.
