SOME MASSACHUSETTS NOTES. [Specially written for FIRE AND WATER.] North Adams is now a city and has a good fire department, of which W. W. Byars has just been elected chief.—The fire department of Northampton has had to dispense with the services of Second Assistant Chief J. If. Maloney, dismissed the service on serious charges preferred by J. H. Boudway, chief of the department. At Holyoke, Wright’s five-story brick store, with its large stock of dry goods and the property of a number of tenants who lived in the upper part, was destroyed by fire, which at one time looked so threatening that assistance was telegraphed for from Springfield. The call, however,was countermanded, as the local department proved itself fully competent to handle the blaze.
