THE FALSE ALARM CRANK. Every year the city of New York is put to the expense of thousands of dollars, owing to the fire department having to turn out to so many false fire alarms. The majority of these are rung up either by drunken men or else by alleged harmless lunatics who have a mania for witnessing the bustle and excitement incidental to the fire apparatus turning out. These are generally harmless young men, not dangerous, but annoying cranks, who go home satisfied if they have fooled several fire companies by night or by day—preferably by night These cranks sometimes organize themselves into gangs and keep the firemen so busy in one particular district that it results in extra vigilance on the part of the police, and the detection and arrest of the culprits.
