FIRE DEPARTMENT OF SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. Chief Sullivan’s lengthy and well compiled report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1896,shows that the San Francisco fire department consists of 557 men with thirty three steam fire engine companies, seven truck companies, seven chemical companies, one water tower, and two monitors. Fout relief engine companies were organized during the year. The running expenses amounted to $717,000, while the property in the hands of the department is valued at $1,267 600. Seven new houses were built, six new fire engines, seventeen hose wagons, one triKk, 20.000 feet of hose,and eighty horses were purchtsed. Three horses were provided for a majority of the engines and trucks. A new ordinance was passed regulating the erection and construction of buildings. The department answered to 49S bell alarms nineteen second alarms, and two third alarms—also 291 still alarms. The losses amounted to $093-5551 insurance, $4,822 7⅛6.…
