WELLS Elisha Gregory, of New York, has completed a well at Hoffman Island, 1,000 feet, eight inches bore. He shut off the salt water and pumped from thirty to forty gallons of fresh water per minute. It is the only deep well in New York that has been successful in getting the fresh water from under the salt water. At Ellis Island others went 1,300 feet to no purpose. The wells in Mechanic Falls, N. Y.. seventeen in number, each fifty feet deep, have given out. Fifteen or twenty artesian wells will now be bored;they will go much deeper than the others.
