MANCHESTER AND ITS WATER DEPARTMENT. NEW ENGLAND has a name for water works and the city of Manchester, N. H., fully sustains the reputation of that section of the United States not only for the excellence of its water supply, but also for the efficiency of its water works, which are in every respect up-to. date and conspicuous as well for the efficiency of the plants as for the tasteful and artistic style in which its buildings have been designed. As a rule, the average water works pumping station and other structures connected with the service are erected with but little eye to architectural effect. So long a s they are solid and serviceable and afford ample accommodation for the machinery and employes, that is about all that is thought of.
