THE MELZINGAH DAM DISASTER. The inquest on the deaths resulting from the bursting of the upper and lower Melzingah dams during the heavy rainstorm of July 13-14 was opened on Monday last. Among the testimony given was the following: Edwin A. Schaeff, superintendent of Fishkill and Matteawan Water Company, owners of the Melzingah reservoir, testified that the watchman had reported to him the day befoie the accident the condition of things there. He had no idea how the dams came to break; but he admitted that the spillway of the upper dam had been leveled up” about six years ago. He believed it was the upper dam that gave way first He had instructed the watchman to keep the gates of the two reservoirs open in case of heavy storms.
