THE NEWTON FIRE DEPARTMENT. CHIEF RANDLETT, of the fire department of Newton, Mass., has issued his third annual report—the twenty-second since the department was established. There were 188 alarms during last year—an increase of sixty-three over the year before,three second alarms, and three for calls outside the city—included in the 188 alarms given above. One fireworks building was totally destroyed; seventeen buildings were partially destroyed; and thirty-seven slightly damaged—making the total number of fire in buildings seventyfour. The value of the buildings burned was $285,910. of contents. $342,985—total $628,895; loss on buildings, $ti,857-79) contents, $8,824.30—total, $20,682 29; insurance on buildings, $254,8oo,on contents, $313,475—total,$568,275; insurance paid on buildings, $14,458.67, on contents, $9,684 -25—total, $24,142.92, total insurance at risk, $582,725; assessed value of real estate at risk, $464,400.
