FIRE NEWS Chief C. E. Bundel, of Sharon, Pa., writes that no burning of the Mercer Cannery and Cold Storage building took place there. No such building exists. What was burned was a disused cannery at Mercer; value about $5,000. A new second-class up-to-date Clapp & Jones engine, capacity 700 gallons per minute, has been supplied by the American Fire Engine Company to the Junior Readings, of Reading, Pa. Its test was most successful. On August 27, the Henschel cigar box factory at Sheboygan, Wis., was burned. A high wind caused the flames to make rapid headway. The department did excellent work, and would probably have saved the building had they received an alarm in time. As it was, the firemen saved the office building, the dry kiln, and most of the lumber. Loss, $20,000; insurance, $3,500. The city is about to buy 2,000 feeet of two and one-half-inch cotton…
