UNDER THE NEW CHARTER. WHEN the fire department of Greater New York is consolidated, the one fire commissioner will have a deputy in Brooklyn for the supervision, under his direction, of the fire departments of that borough and the borough of Queens—the firemen of the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island City to be made members of the fire department of the present city of New York, and assigned to duty therein by the fire commissioner, with the rank and grade now held by them respectively, as far as practicable. The paid fire department shall be extended over the boroughs of Queens and Richmond, as soon as possi ble.and the existing volunteer departments be disbanded—thei apparatus and other personal property to be bought by the fire commissioner (so far as it can be utilized) at a reasonable value.
