NEWARK, N. J., FIRE DEPARTMENT. [Special correspondence of FIRE AND WATER.] NEWARK, N. J , February 26 1898. Th annual report of Chief Engineer Robert Kiersted, of the fire department of Newark. N. J., has been submitted to the board of fire commissioners. The report is for the year ending December 31, 1897, and shows that on that date the department comprised 188 men, consisting of one chief engineer, one assistant chief engineer, two battalion chiefs, and captains and firemen to the number of 188. The force is divided into fourteen steam engine companies, four hook and ladder companies, and one chemical engine company. The Apparatus in service comprises fourteen steam fire engines, of two and three horses each, and cne chemical engine of two horses.
