WATER SUPPLY Water has been turned into the newly constructed mains a Chicago, Ill. The board of estimate of this city has appropriated the sum of $570,000 to pay for the Long Island Water Supply Company’s plant and franchises, condemned by the city of Brooklyn in 1892, under legal proceedings taken in the Supreme court. The filtration of Philadelphia’s water supply has again been deferred by the action of the common council. By a vote of 52 to 50, an ordinance appropriating $3,200,000 for the pur pose was indefinitely postponed. Chairman Seeds, of the finance committee, explained that it was proposed to construct filtering plants at Belmont and Lardner’s Point, and to vote the necessary money in order that the department could prepare its plans intelligently.
