FIRE AND WATER. FIRE Commissioner Russell, of Boston, Mass , has instituted a new departure in his department. In order to encourage the drivers of the horses attached to the apparatus to treat in the best possible manner the animals intrusted to their charge, he now awards prizes to those men whose excellence in the care and handling of their horses is shown in their condition upon inspection. While it is a well known fact that not only the drivers themselves, but also the firemen as a body are proud of their horses, and lavish the highest care upon them ; still, there is no reason why prizes sould not be awarded to those men whose four-footed charges prove that the maximum of attention has been bestowed upon them. Such a method of showing a superior’s appreciation of his subordinates’ diligence in doing his duty cannot fail to provoke others…
