WATER SUPPLY The water proposit on at Whiteboro, N. Y., has been defeated by a vote of 89 to 84. Laporte. Ind., has voted in favor of water works. A new pumping station will be built at the Little Kankakee river. On September 6 the city council of Baltimore,Md., in special session assembled, will discuss filtration. Holyoke, Mass., will probably install a filtering plant before very long. Chicago, September I.—The new pumping station of the Chicago water works, the largest and finest in the city, began operation to day. Its pumps have a capacity of $85,000,000 gallons a day. The Bennett-Everett bid for $40,coo worth of bonds at four and one-half per cent, who bid $ros. 13. for the construction of a water plant at Vailsburg. N. J., has been accepted.
