TOPICS OF THE DAY. EASTERN capitalists have formed a syndicate— the Great Northern Canal and Transportation company—to build a canal from Grand Forks, N. Dak , to Duluth, Minn., so as to connect the rich wheat region of the Red river valley with lake Superior by water. The route is from the Red river by way of numerous small lakes, with which that region is filled, making use also of the Mississippi river a part of the way. Between 300 and 400 miles of cutting will be necessary before the St. Louis river is reached. The president of the company is M. McGowan, of Trenton, N. J. BRIDGEPORT, CONN., is having what seems to be a unique system of automatic tire protection installed in one of its factories.
