THE NORTH GERMAN LLOYD NEW PIERS AT HOBOKEN. IN looking over the plan and specifications adopted for the construction of the piers of the North German Lloyd company at Hoboken, N. J., (which appear elsewhere in this impression), we notice what in our judgment seem to be some grave defects. It is possible that the plan has been approved and adopted by the company in view of financial considerations. It is open to doubt, however, whether the cheaper line is in this case the more economical. If the sea wall or stone bulkhead and the building thereon are to be of solid and substantial construction, why should not the piers be the same? If it is the fact, as is asserted, that the “construction of these piers will necessarily be of wood piling on account of the great depth of soft mud,” it is unfortunate for more reasons than one.…
