NEW BEDFORD’S FIRE DEPARTMENT. Chief Macy has been nearly twenty-five years at the head of the fire department of New Bedford, Mass. In his twenty-fourth annual report he speaks of the department as being in “most excellent condition” while the fire loss last year was the smallest of any year since 1890, although the number of fires and alarms (192) was greater than ever before. The alarms, however,were turned in quickly and answered as promptly by the firemen, of whose intelligent interest in the work and their excellent performance of it Chief Macy cannot speak too highly. The number of non-interfer itig tire alarm boxes is being increased every year, and it is hoped that all will soon be of that type.
