CHIEF HEALY RE-ELECTED. After twenty years of good service as chief of the fire department of Kalamazoo, Mich., B. J. Healy has been re-elected to that office. Another candidate ran him so close that the council’s vote was a tie. The mayor, however, knowing well that the popular desire was to see Chief Healy re elected, cast his vote for him, to the intense delight of the great majority of the citizens of whatever school of politics. The mayor showed by his vote his disapproval of the idea that politics, and not fitness and long service should rule in an election to such an important office. Assistant Chief Charles S. Russell was also re-elected—another thoroughly good choice. A local paper thus comments on the election: “ The Kalamazoo fire department is recognized everywhere as exceedingly well organized.
