CHIEF SWENIE’S RESIGNATION. LAST week we briefly announced that Chief Swenie, of the fire department of Chicago, had resigned, and that he was holding office only till his successor was appointed. This step has been taken on the advice of the doctors, who have said that in all probability the life of the veteran firefighter would be the forfeit in a few mouths if he persisted in attending fires as of old, while he may live many years if he keeps out of the bustle and excitement incidental to the position of chief of the fire department.
