PRAISE FOR THE NEW YORK FIRE DEPARTMENT. Chairman Ogden of the fire patrol committee of the New York Board of Fire Underwriters, was asked by a FIRE AND WATER representative about the statements recently published in various journals reflecting on the New York fire department, charging that the efficiency of the department had been lessened under its present administration, and that this had become manifest by a serious increase in the fire losses. Mr. Ogden said: “Any figures published claiming to show the 1900 fire loss from the patrol reports must have been unauthorized, as the figures are not yet known outside of the office of the patrol. In my opinion there is nothing in the facts to reflect either on former Chief Bonner or on Chief Croker; and, furthermore, there has been a decided decrease in the fire loss of New York during the period since May, 1899, when…
