KALAMAZOO AND ITS FIRE DEPARTMENT. Chief B. J. Healy, of the fire department of Kalamazoo, Miss., reported 167 alarms responded to for the year ending December 81, 1900. The total losses from fire were: On buildings, $4,283.80; on goods, $4,989.53; total loss, $9,253.39. Insurance paid on the losses amounted to $9,011 39; loss over insurance paid, $242. T_____e total insurance on property involved was $146,800. The loss was less than for several preceding years. The installing of a storage battery fire alarm system, and more boxes is recommended. Many outlying districts of the city are in need of fire protection by flic extension of the water mains. There are now 6,300 feet of hose on hand. The report called attention to the need of new quarters for the department.
