PUMPING PLANT. (Special correspondence of FIRB AND WATER.) The Stillwell-Bierce and Smith-Vaile company, of Dayton, Ohio, have constructed an recently installed on foundations at the Upper Lake pumping station at the National Military Home near Dayton, one of their latest improved pumping engines of the horizontal compound direct acting type, operating non-condensing, The Home has had in operation at this pumping station for some time past, two (2) pumping engines of large capacity; but an adequate supply of water was not furnished, aud the officials determined to install a pumping engine which will be sufficiently large for some time to come. The illustration herewith shows the general arrangement of cylinders, etc. The Home officials were determined to install the best type of pump that could be purchased, and specified that the unit should be a thirty-six-inch stroke.
