PERSONALS. The friends of Fred A. Smith, of the Hersey Manufacturing company, will regret to learn that he is confined to bed with an attack of pneumonia. Chief Kennedy, of the New Haven, Cann., fire department, who for some weeks has been dangerously ill, is reported as at last on the mend. George W. Miller, who for twenty years has been chief of the fire department of Reading, Pa., has been re-elected without opposition. George E. Brenton, of the Citizen company, Harrisburg, Pa., fire department, has been elected chief. Captain Benjamin F. Harrington has been elected a fire commissioner of Providence. R. I. Captain Thomas F. Friel, of engine company No. 8, in East Fifty-first street, this city, has been appointed fire marshal for Manhattan, the Bronx, and Richmond, in place of Peter Seery, who has filled the office for four years.
