“TON y BOTEL”. Adverting to the statement that “all Wales has gone crazy” about the “new hymn or dirge,” “Ton y Botel” (The Tune of the Bottle), it may be said (remarks a correspondent) that the “hymn is by no means new; William E. Roberts, chief of the Denver, Colo., fire department, can attest. Chief Roberts was born in Wales, and part of his early life was spent in Carnarvon, where the hymn has recently been given prominence. He first heard it when he was ten years old at a camp meeting in Bangor, North Wales, in 1868.” The editor of this paper remembers his old Welsh nurse crooning out the dirge and lulling him to sleep to its melody many years before the time mentioned by Chief Roberts.
