THE MANHATTAN FIRE ALARM COMPANY DIFFICULT Mayor Low has sustained Fire Commissioner Sturgis of New York city in revoking the permit of the Manhattan Fire Alarm company to use the city’s fire alarm until in connection with its private boxes. After arguing that such an arrangement is contrary to public policy he goes on to say that, “in view of the fact that this decision affects injuriously a considerable investment made upon the faith of the city’s permit, although that permit was revocable by its terms; and, in view of the further fact that the device controled by this company is valued by many as an additional protection of their premises against fire, I have suggested that the city might be willing to enter into negotiations for the purchase of the company’s plant with a view to the city’s giving this protection itself.
