INSURANCE AND ENGINEERING The Prevention of Loss by Fire, an Applied Science.* I owe the honor of being permitted to address you to the fact that for nearly forty years I have been developing an applied science, almost without being aware of it, for the prevention of loss by fire— for thirteen years as an active director in tbe Boston Manufacturers Mutual Fire Insurance company, and for over twenty-five years as its chief executive officer. I deem it an honor to speak to men in whose profession and among whose members, including both engineers and firemen, more heroism, more true courage, more devotion to duty is to be found in any one year in our great cities than is to be witnessed in any warfare for the same period.
